- Clean the lint filter before and after each load, and don’t run the dryer without one.
- Clean the back of the dryer, where lint can build up.
- Check that the venting behind the dryer isn’t damaged, crushed or restricted.
- With the dryer running, make sure the outdoor vent covering opens.
- Have the dryer installed and serviced by a professional.
What New York’s current code says about dryer exhausts
The 2025 Residential Code of New York State took effect on December 31, 2025. It applies to detached one- and two-family homes, townhouses and a few other small residential buildings of up to three stories. Other buildings are covered by the Building Code of New York State.
The sections below describe how a clothes dryer exhaust is required to be installed. They are shared here as general information.
